Leaking ski (from new) - by: Heald

Hi all.
After your collective wisdom and opinions. I have recently bought a new ski (quite expensive, top-end intermediate ski from a reasonably well known brand). After about the second paddle, I noticed it was taking on some water.

Q: Is it normal for a ski to take on a bit of water (100ml?/hour) in pretty rough conditions when the footwell and bucket is frequently swamped? I had found the source of the leak, and thought I had fixed it, but still seems to take on water in rough conditions.
How much is too much, or should this happen at all?

Evo II bailer - by: SpaceSputnik

The gen II Evos have a pluggable bullet style bailer. The plug is attached to the plastic base by a short plastic strap that, due to the short distance and an aggressive bend gets fatigued and breaks. Just happened to me yesterday. I ended up removing the triangular base, fitting a short piece of thin nylon rope and securing the plug with that.

Not sure it that is a good solution, but it got me thinking.
Is it worth looking into retrofitting a heel operated bailer? Current Thinks use bailers similar to Epic.
Would such retrofit be even possible? Would it be just a matter of cutting out a rectangular opening and securing a new bailer in it or some sort of housing needs to be made?

That leash attachment point - by: avisagie

My Fenn Blue Fin has a leash attachment point in the middle of the cockpit. It's convenient and comfortable. But I fell out broaching on a breaking wave in 4-5ft surf and broke the leash after being towed under water for quite a ways before the leash broke.

Seems the ski just doesn't pop over a fair sized wave from the little drag I provide behind it. The wave keeps the ski front of it. it It seems the problem is that wave holds on to the ski

This wasn't first time either. (Clearly I need to get better at riding those waves, but that's going to take some more work, fewer broken leashes and less swimming after a ski on the loose.) The first time the waves were bigger on a reef 200m off-shore. Luckily the wind wasn't blowing and I could catch the ski. That time the leash attachment pulled out and the leash broke.

It seems like in surf like that it would be better to have a leash attachment at the end of the boat. Something like the SUPers and surfers use. That way the boat would straighten out quickly and not keep dragging me on through the surf? It could easily be built out of some decent rope, a quick release, a solid attachment to the PFD or calf and tied around the front or back handle. Has anyone tried it? Is it a bad idea?

Knysna SonicX kid’s ski - by: zachhandler

I just got a Knysna SonicX kids ski for my 8 year old daughter. I wanted to post because there is almost nothing on the web about the ski, not even on the knysna website. We took it out for the first time this morning and it is awesome. It looks fast and sleek. The quality of construction and fittings seem on par with modern adults skis. The size seems perfect. It is listed as 415x47 cm and 12 kg. The weight range is listed as 30-60 kg. My daughter who is 134 cm (53”) sits  with her leg length in the middle of the foot board. I see the age range listed as 5-14; my 5 yr old son who is 112 cm (44”) can just touch the footboard in shortest position but only if he makes his legs completely straight. The water line looks appropriate on flat water,  in contrast to the knysna guppie and jester skis which tend to sit with a fair amount of bow out of the water. My daughter is a few kg under the 30 kg minimum, and primary stability was a touch wobbly her first time in a ski, which seems perfect to me; it is not barge stable. She never came close to tipping on flat water, and seemed comfortable cruising around right away. The boat she has been using until now is a 6 foot rotomolded sit on top and she really noticed the speed.  Turning radius is small of course. Bucket seems about right. Hump is low. Cockpit rim is wide and flat making remount painless and my daughter figured it out pretty quick. There are 2  venturis with bullets.

In summary this is a great option in a dedicated kids ski, and as far as I can tell it is the shortest kids ski on the market.  I got mine from Bruce Gipson at Venture Sport in Florida.

How do tides impact your paddling? - by: sarzelopez

There is barely any wind where I paddle, if we get 10kt, it is a huge day here.

We do however, have relatively big tide swings. Most days from a -0.5m low to a 5.00 high.

Our standard session is a straight out 3.5k, straight back 3.5k (there is a tiny island to mark the turn). Unless it´s really blowing enough to creates (usable) waves moving faster than the tides, most of the time the tides end being what determine which way you go faster.

Here in Panamá that equates to going +/-1.5 KPH faster on average with it vs against it.

From what I understand the more popular ski'ing locations (SA-Australia) dont have as big of a tide swing, but never the less, some.

How big is the difference in speed with/against it where you paddle?

Chalupsky´s paddling technique - by: malvina

Hello,

I recently watched on youtube Oscar´s surfski clinic in Mauritius (link below). In it, he strongly suggest a couple of changes to what I understand is the current technique being used as standard by most paddlers today. Specifically:

1- He advocates for 0 feathering of the paddle (as opposed to the 50 to 60 feather recommended by other experts and pros).
2- He recommends keeping elbows very low throughout the stroke (as apposed to the "chicken wing" or "ball under the armpit" approaches).

He provides very convincing arguments and I have started to gradually incorporate these changes into my stroke. They both feel quite weird at the beginning, thought I am sure with time they will become natural.

Anyway, his approach seem so different to other experts´recommendations and to what many paddlers have been doing for decades that I wanted to see if anybody has any comments on the benefits (or demerits) of these changes or any advice on transitioning to them.

Best

Looking for an ICF K1 for big guys - by: WaterWings13

Hey all, I have been a lurker for a long time and thought i would ask you guys for some suggestions. I am an avid flatwater marathon racer and have been padding an gen 1 SEL for a while with no stability issues at all. I have been pretty successful in the races i have done and wanted to try to find some stiffer competition. I have been wanting to pick up an ICF boat to run in the ACA Marathon Nationals. The issue is that i am not small. Most k1 paddlers are i guess. I'm 6'3" 220 lbs with size 14 shoes. All three of these make finding a boat a challenge. I really don't carry much fat so cutting weight really isn't an option. It seems all the major K1 manufacturers spend all of the their time designing boats and none developing their websites so trying to find detailed info on the boats out there has been a challenge haha. I know there are boats out there that will fit me but identifying them is a challenge.

I want something will decent stability that will meet the ICF requirements. Ideally something that won't break the bank but i'm willing to get the checkbook out for the right boat. So far my list is the Nelo Viper (not sure on the number, 46?) and the Epic Legacy XXL. I have heard good things about Vadja (sp?) but I have not been able to really find any info on them at all. Kirton looks to have some interesting boats but i'm not too familiar with them. I would like a kick up rudder but can fit one after the fact and i like the surfski pedals much more than tiller steering. Any suggestions that you guys might be able to provide would be much appreciated.

Surfski Philippines - by: mcbit

Currently been out here in the Philippines diving in Luzon relatively close to Manila.
In the areas that I’ve been in there looks to be some good conditions for  downwinding particularly during the cyclone season. There is little awareness of the sport here and seemingly no ski availability locally. I see scope for developing the sport here and just wondering how much interest there would be internationally if I based some skis at one ore more of the established diving resorts.

speed goals for the plastic V5 - by: XLV

I'm curious what types of speed goals I should be setting for the V5 over various distances (like 5,10,15,20 miles)

I've seen tcsurfski.com/2018/11/30/epic-v5-v8-v10-speed-comparison/ and a few others, which are helpful.

What speeds would be considered "proficient" and what would be considered "expert" in the V5? As a beginner of 45 days, I'm averaging about 5.3mph over a 5 mile course, and about 5mph over 10 miles (lots of room for improvement, I'm sure). I'm using the small mid wing paddle.

Nelo Viper 46 SOT - by: Jef58

Looks like Nelo is offering a sit on top version of the Viper 46. Should be a good fitness boat or fast flat water craft that could appeal to a lot of warm water paddlers. It may be a little twitchy for my skills, but I could see how a 48 or 50 could be exactly what I would like for quick after work paddles in the flat to choppy Florida Intercoastal water I'm on.  I hope this trend takes off...as an alternative to using a ski for the non-open water situations, and the 17' length is appealing as well.

Interval training, good or bad? - by: waverider

Interval training is effective in most sports. Is it counter productive if it becomes a major part of paddle training?

As well as fitness, technique is a major part of paddling. Improving your technique is about fine tuning your "default" style that you do instinctively without having to thinking. Can interval training work against this? If you are going flat out technique starts to get fuzzy, especially if you are just a beginner, then between bursts the temptation is to back right off and not really focus about keeping everything sharp as this is your "rest" period. Ergo you are rarely in that sweet spot where everything is coming together just right.

Not saying there is no place for it, but it maybe shouldn't be a major focus. I'm just a beginner so not professing to be an expert at this just looking for guidance for the most effective approach.

At the moment I build my speed until it starts getting sloppy, then I stop and restart rather than push on and let it all start to unravel

Any opinions?

Surf-ski rental in Copenhagen, Denmark - by: Helldiver

I'm currently in Copenhagen on business trip, and I got an idea about renting some paddle craft, so I can keep my paddling skills sharp - I just got back from a holiday in Croatia where I brought my Nelo 520, I paddled there every day and it was just amazing.
I found some places where I can rent a sea-kayak, which is a back-up option, but still, something faster and more nimble would be great :)

Paddling efficiency - by: Epicpaddler

Let me start by saying I came to surf ski's from a sea kayak background. As soon as a paddled a surfski I was hooked. I love the speed and efficiency of paddling a ski with a wing paddle. Unfortunately, I tore my rotator cuff and haven't been able to paddle for the past month. My orthopedic dr. cleared me to paddle, but suggested I stick with a low angle stroke.

Kind of hard with a wing paddle. So I busted out my greenland paddle. I'm sure the local fisherman thought I was paddling a pontoon from a seaplane with a 2x4, but it was surprisingly efficient. With minimal effort I was able to cruise around around 8k or 5 miles per hour. Nothing close to my race pace, but I burned about as much energy for a 10K paddle as I would drinking a cup of coffee. I  wouldn't/couldn't race like this, but at least I can get out on the water. It's realativley  pain free.

Anyone else mess around with a greenland stick on a surfski?

Best Fitness Watch for Paddling? - by: Gage

Hello Everyone!

I have recently been looking at Sports Watches for Paddling and I have noticed there is not very much information regarding this (un)essential item. So, I thought I would start a thread for Sports Watches that was a little more current. I ended up purchasing a second hand Garmin Fenix 3 as they have come down to about $200 AUD. I then noticed there were no built in apps for paddling and I have had to much about with installing a 3rd party app for this purpose.

I really want some basic info like realtime speed, Heart Rate and GPS information for my Youtube Clips and as a beginner I don't want to invest too heavily as I have spend a ton of money on my new found hobby already :-)

Has anyone got some more up to date information they would like to share with the community?

What's the Best Sports Watch/ GPS for paddling?

James Gage
