Foot strap contact. - by: SpaceSputnik

Another one of the things that I "should know".
I recently replaced my non-adjustable stock Think strap with my own adjustable version. Once I have done that, I made it tight without much thinking. Next thing I know, I get into waves and go "whoa, I like it!".
Now, the confusion. Oscar says nothing about a tight strap and advices against pulling on it. He says both feet should push forward and one should rotate "forward" around the planted paddle. I am however finding that having firm contact between both feet and the plate helps with stability and rotation. In a way, it feels I can get my body where I want it to be more efficiently. This includes being more on-center and therefore more stable. And more solid connection with the boat which makes the whole system more stable (boat doesn't roll that far when it meets resistance my body almost right away).
And being able to get that non-pulling leg bent more and out of the way seems to help too.

My question is, is it a bad habit of some sort? It's confusing that Oscar is seemingly against it.

K1 Marathon paddle length? - by: kayakercon

Hi there community. I know there are a million posts on paddle selection (I have read them all), but one piece of info I haven't found a satisfactory answer for is recent thoughts on paddle length for K1 Marathon paddling. I know this is a surfski forum, but was hoping some cross-over paddlers might have some thoughts.

Basically, when I first did sprints (1000m) back in the day, the advice was "stand your paddle up and reach up and you should just be able to wrap your finger tips over the top blade." I still see that offered on the few sprint resource pages I have found, and perhaps it is still true for sprints.

But what I am wondering is, do athletes competing in K1 marathon today run shorter paddle lengths? What kind of lengths do you run?

It would also be helpful to know your height,  level of paddling, and style of blade (parallel, teardrop) if you want to list your lengths. For reference, I'm 5'11, 75kgs, and fairly fit/strong.

Thanks!

Fake video scam sites pop up after ICF Ocean Racing Champs - by: robin.mousley

I'm completely gobsmacked.

I fight almost every day against spammers trying to dump their crap on the forum, but I never expected what happened yesterday and is still happening today on the Facebook page.

It started on Tuesday.  I'd asked the ICF Ocean Racing World Champs organisers for the link to the tracking for the race - they hadn't made it clear whether they'd have streaming video or tracking.  Then a post went up on the Surfski Scotland Facebook page with a link to a live streaming page.  I quickly reposted it all over Facebook, inserted it into the two articles on the event on this website and I also posted it on a bunch of whatsapp groups here in South Africa.

And then I clicked on the link.  Only to find that it was a scam site, designed to steal your credit card details and trick you into a monthly "subscription".  Like a complete arse I signed up - in spite of my instincts screaming at me to stop...

Having confirmed the badness (and having cancelled my credit card as a precaution), I deleted all the posts - and set about trying to find the source of the link.  Turned out that two scammers had dropped the links into the "Recommendations" section of the event's Facebook page.  Incredible.

It took a while to get hold of the organisers who were busy organising the event!  And in the meantime, others had started to share it and I spent a few hours chasing the shares down, luckily before it had gone viral.

Eventually the race organisers did see my frantic messages and deleted the links on their page (the scammers tried doing the same thing on the Surfski.info Facebook page too).

But this morning, they're back - more comments on posts on the page, with the links to the dodgy website.  Infuriating.

I suppose you could say that it's a back-handed compliment that a surfski event should be considered worth the trouble of mounting a scam campaign - but I'm amazed, does this happen on other sporting events?

If you see online offers of streaming websites for your favourite event...  be very careful before clicking on any links!

Cadence vs power - by: mrcharly

A little while ago I tried out an app that gave a cadence as well as speed. It showed that my cadence was way up - about 90 for cruising.
My times were stagnating, so I altered my paddling, tried to go back to lower cadence, pulling as hard as I can. Kept paddle length the same.
Hitting big problems with forearms though - they are wearing out well before I'm stressing my aerobic capacity. I have a weak left wrist/forearm from a severe injury, but it is my right arm that is giving out.

This makes me think that I've gone far too far towards to higher power side, and should go back to higher cadence. How do you tell which is best? It is difficult to have the app rigged, since I can't use the setup when running portages. Thinking of trialling speeds on level water for a 5km sections.

crosswind techniques - by: waverider

Last few trips have been longish hauls with onshore winds creating small but messy wind chop. Made me wonder if I could improve my technique in these conditions as I found it way slower and harder than it would have in my touring kayak. Felt like I was missing something as it came down to stability rather than getting any real power down and technique was just going out the window. This was not even big conditions.

Feel like there must be some tricks I am missing, other than just zig zigging to angle into the wind

Surfski for big guys - by: M.v.E.

I am asking for a friend of mine who wants to buy a surfski. He´s a big fella. He tried my Stellar SR 2. Gen. and it was way too small for him. We adjusted the footplate in the max. position but his knees were very high and it was too tight at the hips. Then he tried a V 8 which was better but still a little too short for his long legs. Any ideas  which surfski might fit him
He needs a stable beginners boat like the V8 and I guess he will use it exclusively in flat water.

How to safely crest big waves (going out) - by: manta

Hi

Saturday I went for a paddle and we had huge swell in the bay where I paddle. I went to a local surf spot as I was thinking of doing some surfing of the ski. However when I got there I saw it was too big for me so made up my mind to leave.

As I was leaving there was a huge deep water wave which looked like it would break on me. I paddled to get over it and had a huge drop off the back. I was weightless for a second or two and then hit with a thud. Short story cracked my boat pretty decently, right across the bucket.

Is there another technique I am not aware of that allows a paddler to safely crest big waves without falling off the back and cracking or breaking a boat?

Thanks

Nelo 550 faster than Stellar SEI 1g? - by: d0uglass

I'm reasonably satisfied with my current boat, a Stellar SEI 1g in heavy construction, but a friend of mine is about to sell his Nelo 550 and I'm wondering if it would be a worthwhile upgrade for me. The boats are the same width (46 cm) but the Nelo is 60 cm shorter and about 4 kg lighter. I'm 75 kg / 178 cm, 40 years old, paddling for about a year and half, comfortable on the SEI in all conditions including rough downwind ocean stuff. Looking for something that will give me a little advantage in flat water racing and that will maybe be a little more nimble riding bumps. Curious to know what y'all think. Thanks.

Think Evo II vs Stellar SES 1g - by: SpaceSputnik

An advantage SES g1 popped up recently in the local classifieds.
I am 99.99% sure I will not be swapping boats this time, but lets make it a thought experiment.
How much of a shock am I looking at in this switch?

Just to set things up here: I did a quick test paddle in an older V10L (g1? not sure. a venturi drain, no handles at all), in flattish conditions. Hit it off right away, felt very nice, to the point I have actually wished I had that boat. SES is narrower but if I am not mistaken more stable?
How much faster than my Evo? Both are glass, Evo being about 3 lb heavier.

I am 5'6", 160lb. I have to pad the Evo to feel connected to it.

Can it be true? Crossing over from OC1 (which I have one of his) to surskis?!

I can only imagine that it will be very downwind oriented.

12th annual Heal The Beach downwind race. - by: Fath2o

Race will be held Saturday 9/28/19 and usually starts around 1300. 7 mile race from Mondos to to Ventura pier. All paddle craft welcome! Nice fundraiser for local high school aquatics programs.
Last year TVE took first overall and in surfski division. MCimes was a close second. I was way behind. I'll just say I was a bit out of my element with little wind or waves. Probably wouldn't have made much difference? Hopefully better conditions this year. My participation will be providing safety boat.
There are two different dates on website/registration page? I was texted the 28th.
I am unable to retrieve messages or phone numbers on so called SMART phone.

An Epic trip to Caddo Lake Tx - by: JBL

My friend and I just got home from three days of paddling Caddo Lake in deep East Texas. This is one of the few  cypress swamps in the world and the only naturally formed lake in Texas. Most boaters of all types stick to the well marked trails and keep the map handy. My friend and I each carried one,  We stayed off the bayou and explored the chutes, sloughs, ditches and the lakes.
Glossary
Bayou, slow moving waterway, looks like a river on a map, where the motor boats are
chute, Carter Chute, arm off the lake, paddling through a flooded cypress forest
slough, shallow narrow, twisting, slow moving waterway, out there through hardwood forests
ditch, man made slough, tend to be straight
One morning we were at the CL Wildlife Management Area boat ramp and on the water by 630, we launched into the pitch black of a very dense cove. I used my headlamp to find the license plates nailed to trees that serve as trail markers.
Undoubtedly the spookiest thing I have done in a long time. Some large fish moved under the boat and made me jump. The way sound and light are distorted out there and the sounds swamp makes you  understand why people think they see Bigfoot.
Some photos and short videos    1drv.ms/a/s!ArNMWZN7wa-AkiiVlQ-W7VIDVla9
I encourage all to check out Caddo Lake, it's like this, you want to be able to see it all, the sunrise, midday, sunset, the stars, and paddle all day.

G'day, New Paddler - Brisbane Region! - by: Crab Stick

Greetings folks!

Apart from some limited experience as a youth, I'm brand spanking new to Paddling. I've just purchased a Surf Ski 2nd Hand - my budget was meager - but I think for the money it will be sufficient for a start up. The Ski is likely so old nobody has heard of it ... CHD (Cory Hutchings Designs) Sonic Ocean Style - NZ  - Carbon Hull and Honeycomb Lid. I'm currently getting roof racks and accessories together, have yet to buy a Paddle --- these are more expensive than my Boat!

Looking to connect with other Paddlers in my area - or those willing to help or share knowledge. If there are any locals happy to kick skegs and have a chat, shoot me a line. Advice on best places to buy gear etc would be appreciated also.

Best, CS ;-)

New Paddler Central Coast NSW - by: Craig M

Hi, like Crab Stick's recent post I am also new to paddling and in my late 40's. I did a lot of wave skiing back in the day when they were popular but saw the new ski's and thought - that's for me!

I managed to find an old Dorado in really good condition that I am getting the hang of. To be honest I really struggled at first but now I can cruise at 8.5km/hr (flat water - 5 paddles in) and its steadily going up each time I get out. I saw that the Dorado's are capable of 11.5 so I have a long way to go. I am fortunate to live on the beach and be surrounded by lakes so I have no excuses. I cant believe how technical this is, catch, leg drive, rotation.........

I am loving this site, the tips and videos. I'll be chiming in with plenty of questions.

First One - if you were going to work on one item, where would you start. I'm currently doing slowish 10k paddles to get the feel of it. I don't want to race just get to the ocean and catch a few runners. I can kind of get pieces right at times and occasionally together but when I try to put power down is all goes to crap.

Thanks,,

Selling my Nelo 550 - by: kwolfe

Hey folks, if anyone is looking for a 550 on the east coast US, I'm selling mine.  It's about a season and a half old and really only gets paddled in fresh water.

Ski is in perfect condition, just not the right ski for what I need.  I paddle my V14 95% of the time and am looking for something more along the lines of a V10 sport, evo, or stellar SR for a rough water boat.  Willing to trade just in case.

Thanks all
