Help choosing a south african K1 - by: zachhandler

$

I am looking at importing a south african k1 to the USA this fall. I currently paddle a kayakpro aurum in sprint weight with tiller steering. I want a marathon weight boat, and I want pedal steering. I am looking at the Raid and Spectra from Kayak Centre, and the Vantage pro or vantage plus from Knysna. I am 80kg/175 lbs. My marathon speed these days is about 12.5kph. I don’t really race k1 much though, I mostly just use it as a flatwater training boat.

Does any body have and insight into the pros and cobs of these boats, or have any experience with how they handle? Any advice appreciated!

Paddle float as a remount backup - by: SpaceSputnik

Hi

I was practicing remounts at the end of my paddle a few days ago. I was tired and the wind picked up and i was was not having a 100% success rate. I have a decent idea where my technique needs work but it got me thinking that a plan B would be nice.
When I was sea kayaking in the past we always carried paddle floats. Self rescue with a float can be less straining than a remount and it should probably work with my V7.
Basically after dumping you slide a float over a paddle blade and inflate it. Than place the paddle at 90 degrees to the boat and hook it to the foot strap with your thumb. Then remount a stabilized boat while holding the paddle in-place and with the other hand on the far side of the bucket.
A deflated float is smaller than a rolled newspaper and can go on the rear deck under bungees. Sounds like something worth trying...

In 2013 there were about 50 ski designs on the list, today (Sept. 2017) it`s up to 202 and there must a few more out there that are absent. Feel free to let me know what`s wrong/missing from the list.

Happy paddling all!

V10 g2 vs. V10 g3 - by: Newbflat

$

Curious if anyone has had significant time in both and can compare and contrast. I’m mostly interested in stability comparisons. It also if it catches runs easer and carries speed better. I was never really Comfortable with the stability profile in my g2 V10 and g2 V10 Sport. The trade off of more initial stability and less secondary always felt a bit less that reassuring in confused or messy chop. In contrast other skis I have had are more in the less initial and more secondary stability category and I have found them much more sicker in messy stuff or side chop. If you have paddled both, how do they compare, how does the stability profile compare? Does the g3 feel more or less stable?.... in chop? You get the picture.

Cold weather surfski top - by: Epicpaddler

With the weather getting cooler here in the Northeast US, looking at getting a new surfski paddling top. Maybe something to go over my 3/4mm farmer john wetsuit. Something that is good for cool/cold weather that breathes well. Anyone have experience with the options from Vaikobi in the Vcold series?

Got it but I don't- forward stroke - by: Wingnut

After watching countless videos and reading some great articles on the forward stroke I think finally understand what I need to do. I go out and practice thinking I might finally be making progress only to get home and see my gopro video shows I still dont have it right. I now have the paddle stroke down fairly well when i practice it on one side. But, when i try to put the full sequence together it immediately falls apart. Instead of planting the blade with good rotation, I'm already facing forward. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips?

Time for a new boat - by: 1932023550378760@facebook

Howdy all

It's time for a big upgrade.
I'm going from a Stellar SEI that has served me well while I've learnt to paddle and get my balance. I'm now in the market for a new racer. (I mostly paddle in Flat Water but will soon go ocean but that will start in my Stellar). I'm in QLD, Australia if it matters.

I'm tossing up between the Think Uno Max or the Epic V14 or the new Stellar SEA.
I'm a bigger guy 183cm & 90kg (Losing weight and hoping to get to 85kg).

Anyone have any solid advice?

Wing Paddle Recommendations? - by: DrA5

I currently use a Jantex Gamma M wing and a Mid-Wing Epic paddle, but I am thinking of selling both and getting something else. I like the feel of the Jantex, but not the weight. I like the speed of the Epic, but not the feel, as it seems to "cavitate" more, I think due to the 90 degree hard edge on the wing compared to other paddles, as I don't have this sensation with my Jantex.

I am looking at options in the US market, such as Gara, Orka, Braca, etc, ??.

Most of my paddling is inland flat water/lake, with some Great Lakes surf paddling.

I know paddles, like bicycle saddles, are subjective in nature, and what one likes and works for them, may not work for others, but any tips and recommendations are appreciated.

I was considering another Jantex Gamma Rio Medium Minus or Gara Odin. Jantex has so many sub categories of each model its hard to figure out what is what.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for a new GPS - by: Nige

I currently have a Garmin 310 XT which I attach to my foot strap so I can see my real time speed, distance and time (3 fields, but with speed as the main field)

I am looking to replace it, but it seems all the new GPS units have got smaller and are designed to be worn on the wrist, which is not what I want. If anything, I would like a bigger display than the 310XT (old man's eyes!), and it must be able to be fitted to my ski (foot strap or similar.)

Any suggestions?

1st gen Nelo 560 vs Epic V14 - by: SurfskiEstonia

$

Dear forum members,

Ever since I've read the reviews on the Nelo 560 1st generation, it had become something of a holy grail ski: K1-like, unstable, fast, romantic.

I paddle in relatively calm waters and 90% of the time in the summer there is always enough wind to move the water in nice 20-40cm waves, and very very rarely waves big enough to think of a stable ski. I currently use a Nelo Ocean ski L and can paddle in those mild conditions in all directions with pauses between strokes, hands in the air thinking about technique - so quite stable in my opinion. I've recently tried a more stable Vajda ski and found the added fatigue completely unnecessary, so definitely thinking of a faster ski than mine.

The kayak shop of Arjan Bloem in the Netherlands currently has a used 1st gen 560 in their inventory in full carbon: www.kanokoopjes.nl/prod.php?id=8252 . It has been burning a hole in my mind for the last couple of days. The question that bothers me: is this boat noticeably faster on flat water / small waves than an Epic V14 in performance layup (11kg vs 15 kg; the ski weight question is just a detail)? My own physical parameters are 183 cm, 87 kg with clothing.

Because if this Nelo isn't faster, it'd be infinitely smarter to go for the V14 and use it's surfing capabilities which are, at least by what I've read, much more accessible in bigger conditions than those of the original 560.

Anyone who has paddled both, I'd be really grateful for Your input!!

Paddle grabbing enough? - by: firtree

I am a pretty new paddler with an S18S and an Epic Small Mid wing paddle. I keep reading about feeling like your paddle is in cement or rock-solid, but I just don't get that feeling and wonder if I am doing something wrong. If I am pushing hard to get up to speed I quickly overpower the paddle and cavitate, but even when I am just cruising along, I don't feel a lot of pressure on the paddle. The paddle just feels like it is pulling nice and smooth through the water. To be clear, I am not unhappy with my speed over water (I am doing an unimpressive 5mph average over an hour), but something seems off. If it matters, I am 6' 220lbs and reasonably strong, though without the best endurance. I am working on getting and keeping my stroke rate up higher to keep me moving along at speed.

Thanks!

DeBrito leak - by: nell

$

Now that the DeBrito bailer has been in the hands (on the feet?) of lots of paddlers worldwide, has anyone come up with a good hack to keep it more watertight?

Mine was watertight when it was new. A few months later, it started slowly leaking into the footwell (not into the hull), so I swapped out the thin neoprene washer for a new one. The new one was good at first but then started slowly leaking into the footwell a few weeks later. The leak rate isn't that severe - maybe a couple of pints every 10-15 minutes or so, but I have to think that since it leaked much more slowly when new, there must be a fix for this.

Anyone make a washer cutout from a different material? Soaked the neoprene washer in parrafin or something? Anything else worked or didn't work? I have to think that some paddlers out there have approached this issue...

Surfski upgrade help - by: Dave74

Hi this is my first post, I'm Dave from the UK.
I'm newish to surfski and paddling in general.
I impulse bought a surfski 18 months ago.

I have an old demo Spirit PRS Surfski that I want to upgrade, I find it too tippy in waves and feel it's holding up my journey in surfski - mainly when turning and it's beam waves. Sea where I am is almost always choppy.

I thought an epic v8 would be the obvious choice but a Kysna RS has come available at the right price

Just wondering if this will have enough of a stability increase as it's not a massive jump in width
Spirit PRS 567 x 50
Kysna RS 580 x 52.5

I've never previously kayaked so my bracing won't be great but the PRS is old so ready to change regardless.

Any thoughts on stability and surfski to look at would be great

Thanks

Boat Volumes - by: Meerkat

Hi there,

I am in search of some advice please. I’m on the hunt for a second hand ski. My problem is pretty much my size (you would never think a woman would say that right...)

I’m 1.57 m tall and weigh 58 kg’s. The best way for me to go about selecting a ski is to look at the volume. Currently I can’t find any information anywhere on the volume of the Fenn Swordfish S. Can anyone please provide me with that?

I’m currently considering the Think Evo (up to 105 kg), Swordfish S (??) and Carconology Vault (up to 80 kg). I love the Vault but here in Australia it’s very new and therefore they are not yet available as second hand. The older ones are very very scares because their owners love them too much.

So my question to you would be, between the Swordfish S and Evo which volume wild suit me better? I also had a look at Stellar and Epic but their voumes are just massive for me.

Also while making my choice I am also a bit cheeky and expecting my next ski to be stable yet fast in both flatter, messed up stuff (like Sydney Harbour) and some ocean stuff (nothing like Millers Run though). Mmm...

Thanks

2018 Epic 'Elite' Boat Construction - How robust ? - by: uk gearmuncher

I've been offered the chance for a reasonably price Epic in boat but in the 2018 'Elite' black boat construction. The 10kg suggested weight sounds great for hauling the ski around and on and off the car but I'm worried that this construction would be fragile or really any good as an 'everyday' boat.

Has anyone got any feedback of this construction or know of any from elsewhere ?

Tips for Winter Paddling - by: photofr

Surfskis originated for warm-water paddling. Over the years, I believe that many people have proven that surfskis also offer more safety during even the COLDEST of places.

While you may all have several tricks for staying warm, here's how to resolve some COLD FEET ISSUES:
1. Do not take your ski to a repair shop to enlarge the footwell. :(
2. Use 5mm booties with no soles, because you will not be walking much while in the ocean.
3. Booties with soles tend to be much larger, and will rarely fit a surfski footwell.
4. For max warmth, place booties inside your wetsuit.
5. For added warmth, be sure to minimize water flow at the ankles.

Perhaps you guys want to add some "unusual" tricks, or tricks that you have tried and that work well for you.

Old, Heavy (Cheap) Fenn XT? - by: MCImes

Hi guys,
I can pick up a ~10 year old Fenn XT, heavy layup - he doesnt know the layup but says its 39lbs/17.7kg with a painted bottom - for a very good price, but am wondering if its worth it.

My goal would be to find a boat that surfs better than my SR g1 Advantage but am wondering if the old and heavy XT would be a temporary upgrade? Its cheap, near by, and the only Fenn for sale on the friggin west coast, so its tempting. Also, my SR does not surf worth a crap, so i'd really like something different for the winter surf season and Fenn's seem to grab onto waves very easily.

I'm really only looking for a cheap, temporary boat to get me through next summer when I will have some more $ to put towards the boat I actually want long-term.

Think i'll regret the standard glass layup in terms of acceleration onto waves or durability? The XT is cheap enough I'd probably keep my SR and decide which boat I want to sell next summer.
