The holy grail of surfski design has ultimately been found announced:

Sounds like a paraphrase on the German Graf Spee micro cruisers (faster than any stronger ship, stronger than any faster ship).

What are people using for paddle grips? - by: davgdavg

I'd like to increase the diameter of my paddle a little by putting some sort of grip on there.

What are people using? (I thought about bicycle handlebar tape, which would be a nice feel, but I think it would lose adhesive quickly from the salt water.)

Angle of Paddle Plant - by: pulpfiction44

I asked this in the TIPS section but not much traction. Being new to the site and surfski i hope I can post here as well.

I am currently 2 days into surfski, a Stellar S18S. Working on getting footboard just right. Once i have this sorted out my next step is to figure how to best enter the water with the paddle, an Epic mid wing.

Is the best possible scenario to enter as far forward as possible with the shaft perpendicular to the surface of the water?

If so and my arm length precludes this unless I lean forward to plant do I lean forward (bad posture?) or do i simply plant a bit further back towards the stern, which in my mind will rob my stroke of power.

Lastly given the choice of a shorter stroke or a longer stroke by entering not quite perpendicular but forward which is the best option?

In a perfect world with the footboard set properly my arm length would be such that i could enter very far forward without leaning however I don't see this happening as my arms are lot very long.

I know I may be overthinking this but I want to develop good habits at the outset.

Being 63 y/o I have no illusions of a Miller's Run or Molokai but want to do this the right way.

Any thoughts from you experienced folks would be most welcome.

Remount Question - by: LakeMan

As you guys probably heard too many times I paddle a 2nd gen Think Uno Max. According to Wesley it's one of the toughest skis to remount. The bucket is deep and the walls are very thin making it not only difficult but painful to mount. Being 17" wide doesn't help matters. After months of practicing remounting I have decided that the straddle mount works much better for me and it doesn't hurt so much.
My question is, how may of you use the straddle method over the more elegant sidesaddle method? And why do you use it and what type of ski makes this a better choice?

Anyone in Newport Beach - San Diego area who wants to paddle with me in October? - by: Laszlo Varga

Hi guys. I lived and trained in NAC 2001-2003 and in San Diego 2003-2005 (I believe my old Kajner paddle is still in the SDCKT boat house) while getting my university degree (Swedish kayaker studying in the US). I remember doing harbour laps in K1 with Andy Bussey, Curt Bader and Patrick Hemmens was riding wash with his fenn ski. Also had some memorable workouts with Philippe B in SD.

Anyways, I was a K1 sprint kayaker back then, and the last 3 years I have moved over to surfski.

I am coming to SoCal for two week holiday in the end of October, and it would be really fun to do a downwind with someone there if they are up for it and wouldn't mind hooking me up with a paddle and ski.

Yoga for paddling - by: malvina

Hi,

I have recently enjoyed very much a book titled "Yoga for Paddling". I thought I would share it here as some of you may find it interesting as well.

It provides very good insights of what muscular imbalances are typical of paddlers, and tells you what stretching and strengthening exercises are good for correcting them. Author has been a pro paddler, and you can tell she knows about her subject.

Sailing surfski with amas? - by: fitz

Has anyone taken a surfski and modified it into a small sailing trimaran like the Triak? After upgrading to a V10 Sport, I have a Stealth Strika that is unused and apparently unsellable here in Panama. So I'm thinking of adding amas and a small mast and sails. Anyone done something similar with a surfski?

"BEST"Kayak Ergometer - by: drjay9051

I am considering buying an erg for off water training. Being fairly new to surf ski I find it dififcult to work on my stroke technique without losing stability. As an example if I want to concentrate on paddle entry I find it quite difficult to sit in the bay with chop and work on this aspect. On the erg i can repeat entry over and over without stability issues.

My thought is with an erg i can be somewhat more precise in my training as far as technique. Esp. on cold wet days.

I know the erg is more stable than is my ski but I believe it would be helpful.

I have read reviews for the Vasa and the Speedstroke. Both seem to get good reviews. I now see 2 others,
the K1 trainer and the stroke2 max ergo.

All of these ergs have endorsements. i don't know if these are paid endorsements or not.

In the end is one really better than the others?

From what i have read the Speedstroke Gym model is tops but of course this is just someone's opinion.

Has anybody used more than one of the above ergs and if so your thoughts, please.

On the other hand is it worth spending $2,000 or more for one of these?

Will i progress any faster or develop better technique with an erg as opposed to just time in the ski when conditions permit?

18.5" x 20' vs 17" x21" : Cruising speed diff? - by: PeteCress

If I can maintain 6 mph on a 18.5" x 20' Huki S1-R, what sort of speed increase should I expect on a 17" x 21" ski?

Flat water, assume no capsizes.

Not sprint speed, just max aerobic cruising speed.

I'm not looking for great detail - just ballpark: a few tenths of an mph? .5 mph, more?

What was your first race experience? - by: LakeMan

The only time I've raced my ski is when those I was trying to over-take didn't know I was even there. Which means I've never officially raced anyone.

There is a race coming up that I am considering. There is a 2k (too short), a 5k (a little better) and a 17 mile distance race (I can feel the burn already). These are flatwater races.

What was your first race like? Good experience or not? Was it harder than expected? Did it meet your.expectations? How well did you do? Did it start a long line of races or did you retire after the first time? Did you discover you weren't as fast as you thought you were? Etc.
Please.explain in a million words or less. Thanks

New Epic V11 - by: Jonno_NZ

I have been looking at getting a new ski for a while now and have struggling to decide between a V10 or V12. I have read every article on balance vs speed vs ability I can get my hands on and still can't decide.

So imagine how happy was I when I saw Epic had released a new V11 - my perfect ski! However reading up a bit more I realize it may not be the case - at a first glance it looked almost like a V12 Light but then more reading shows it capacity is up to 120kg's.

Its obviously a lot shorter which I think is great - I assume that means it turns quicker which is good for a lot of the races I do that have lots of turns. But how does that impact speed? Where does it fit on the great Epic speed chart?

Its the same width as the V12 so how does it compare in terms of stability? How does length impact stability?

How does the different length and volume impact its performance in the open ocean? Is it better or worse?

So many questions but few answers - its almost like Epic is taunting me with its lack of information!

Hey everyone. So I sold my V8 and am looking for another ski to compliment my SEL.

The V8 is a great ski and served as my winter boat but I'm looking for either a step up to something like and SR, V10sport, XT or equivalent.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any insight. I'm online the web checking daily.

Which paddle? - by: Hulk

HI All,

I'm in the market for a new paddle and have put my thoughts on the Small version of the Meek A series or the Gara Odin which both appear to be very similar to the Jantex Gamma Rio in shape.

I've only had the opportunity yet to paddle with the Medium version of the Meek A which was a great paddle but the blade too big for me. The quality of the Meek really impressed me.

The small version of the Odin is in numbers (surface area) a lot smaller than the Meek and Jantex Small plus.. see table below:

Blade width - mm Blade length - mm Surface area - cm2
Meek A Small - ?156? ?488? 715
Jantex Small Plus 158 485 720
Gara Odin Small 166 478 677

Is there anyone who has done a review in relation to paddle differences and or build quality differences?
I'm paddling with the Odin Small this weekend but will not be able to trial the Meek A small.

Thanks.
Regards
Pete

surfski.info revamp: Your opinions please! - by: robin.mousley

As you know, surfski.info has been in hibernation for the last couple of years... The only reason I kept it going was the forum, which has steadily increased in popularity.

I'd like to ask you for your opinion(s).

What should be the primary focus of the site? For example, my feeling is that for most people, race reports have less attraction than, say, five years ago before the total onslaught of social media... These days, races have facebook pages, they dump the results and a million photos onto Facebook and, "have a nice day".

A future surfski.info should rather have:

- The forum given a more prominent place.
- Manufacturer and model database with reader ratings/reviews
- International race database with reader ratings/reviews and other information (such as tourism stuff)
- Extensive, clear, how-to and training material
- Equipment reviews
- Podcast (manufacturer interviews, training info, paddler interviews, trends and races)

What suggestions do YOU have for your new surfski.info? What priority should we give to new functionality?

If you want to get hold of me directly, rather than here in this thread, email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thanks!

Nelo 550 - very brief and non-conclusive impressions - by: Impala

$
0
0
Hi all,

during last weekend's Lake Constance Marathon I had the opportunity to paddle the new Nelo 550L (in WWR) for a couple of minutes. My background: a midpacker using an own-designed hybrid ski made of Paulovnia Wood, I can't sit a K1. I like to test other skis to compare to my own designs, get new ideas or strengthen my prejudices :P

As I paddled the new boat only for some minutes on flat water, these are really just first impressions supposed to start a discussion, not conclude it.

The intermediate Nelo was advertised as much more stable but almost as fast as the 560. This is to be achieved by a hull that is no longer round, but rather flat and box-like. In mention this beforehand because this explains the impression of boat behaviour I got. I also had the chance to paddle the 560 in similar conditions a couple of months ago, and I liked that ski very much.

The 550 has ample initial stability, as can be expected. It also accelerates very fast and turns on a dime. Secondary stability, at least for what I am used to, is lower than expected when you hit chop (it still high compared to an elite ski!). The cruising speed did not seem extraordinary to me as compared to my 580 x 52 hybrid (which has a very rounded hull with a 42cm max waterline). I would guess the 550's max waterline at my weight (72 kg) rather at 43-44 cm. I can of course not make any serious judgment on downwind behavior, but the few boat wakes I surfed left me with a very good impression about the maneuvrability & controllability of the ski.

Still, I must say that this boat did not 'blast me away' ... well, compared to my own design, commercial skis always tend to give me the impression of not snugly sitting in the boat, and the boat not snugly sitting in the water, but rather 'on' it, which I do not like, but this is rather better with the 550 as compared to longer skis. In defense of the 550 I also should mention that only the L version is available right now, in which I do not get enough boat contact.

The major point I want to make is something else: I believe it is not a fortunate strategy to make skis more stable by mostly flattening the bottom. This may give you excellent primary stability when first entering the boat, but stability reserves are then quickly exhausted in the rough if the boat is only around 45 cm max width.

Instead, I would make a narrow, tipply hull just broader (not flatter), which mostly adds secondary stability, something that in some boats you only discover once you enter the waves. The resulting boat behavior is more harmonious in real conditions, and the waterline stays narrow, preserving the speed potential. Last saturday I raced my own much broader hybrid in flat conditions over exactly 21 km in 11.8 kmh, with wash-riding opportunities only in the first half of the race, and I am not a race paddler by pedigree (I am training hard, nevertheless). And my boat is more stable than the 550 in waves, I dare say.

The message I want to get across is that I believe that many intermediate skis perform worse than they could (given their stability) because many designers commit the same specific mistake: they are anxious to keep overall width narrow in order not to give the impression of a beginner boat, and then pay for that with a flat bottom. Maybe I see that wrong, but it would be a pity if - after the excellent new 560 - the 550 would be merely a 'me too' design in that respect.

My remarks may be irrelevant for real downwind conditions, but let's face it: flatwater speed is an important criterion for surfskis, many of which are actually much more paddled in calm conditions than imagined by the designers. And speed may be even more sought after by buyers of intermediate than of elite skis. (in discussions on elite skis, people always ask for the stability of the ski, while speed is dominant in discussions on intermediate skis). I just think that many intermediate designs follow a misguided approach, but maybe that is just ... my prejudice I once more managed to confirm ;) .
