G' Day,
I forget when but we started using Tens + or - 30/40 years ago and still in use for my self, people like Bruce Lee were using and promo Them, we were into T'ai Chi and the soft M. Arts. my self today at 84 still teaching T'ai Chi, Still Paddle a Surf Ski on open water were I may say they belong, Still riding Single Speed Mt Bikes and living the good live teaching Older people how to breath and move ox about the body. I feel using the Tens for a week or so when trying to work out a health problem is the way to go, IT is not to be an every day thing, also single malt, an Oz beer and keeping busy seems to work well for my self.

Wetsuit - by: SurfskiJunky

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend me a good wet suit for middle east winter? It is about 9-19 C (49-65 F) usually in the winter.
Should I aim for long suit or 3/4?
How thick it should be (in mm)?
Should I look for pre-bent suit?
Is it better to use separate top and bottom or whole suit?

Thanks in advance.

Chiropractic treatment for back pain - by: Johaan56

I am 28 years old and I am facing severe pain on my back for the last 12 months. The pain sometimes extends to my right leg and is unbearable. I have been suggested with a few calcium tablets by a physician. Is it curable by chiropractic treatment? I had recently read that chiropractic treatment is good for back pain. I am planning to get the treatment from Physiomed, nearby chiropractic care centre in Toronto. But I am here to get expert advice. Thank you in advance.

Raw Beginner Story - by: Sinkme

Why I did what I did is a longer story, full of personal limitations and misconceptions, so I’ll just talk about what I did and the results.
Starting Status:
Personal Stats: 58 yrs, 6’1”, 215 lbs (down from 230, 6 months earlier)
Kayaking Experience: 3 times, but 20 min arm endurance exercises in gym for a year.
Gear: 12 ft Walker Bay Tandem Inflatable, with fwd seat reversed for leg drive.
Garmin watch with speed, Max HR% tracking and display.
Location/Conditions: Seattle. Flat water in Lake Washington and it’s ship canal.
Begin:
Go out twice a week for an hour on the water with the goal of getting the muscles and tendons in shape without injury. Search the web regularly and read as much as possible. Best advice: train at 50 to 70% MHR. Worst advice: hyper extend shoulder at the catch for more power (one month down time for injury). Best video: Paddling with Zsolt. An older V8 was occasionally available for rental. No stability issues. An old V10S was also available. A good way to play “Marine Biologist” (impossible for me). My inflatable is a barge, so no stability training there.
I talked to the local surf skiers at the Cross Sound Race. Advice: get a wing paddle, now. Don’t go cheap. Feather it, now. Try as may skis as possible. Get a lesson. The SWIFT gang meets Wed night at Sand Point at 6:00. There is a web board for local discussion and coordination. I start stalking them.
Before the paddle twist was sorted out, my form was wildly random. Going straight was a constant problem. Most web advice on twist is justification, not engineering, just like listening to snow ski instructors (I once raced at the national level). You have to have a stable stroke angle first, then find the feather angle that works.
Blisters were a problem. In hindsight, carry a glove that stops blisters (some make blisters) and put it on when it starts to hurt, but before it blisters. Calluses are your friends.
Speed would jump about: 3.0 mph, then 3.4 as I got in a lucky good stroke or two. I could not figure out what I was doing different stroke to stroke.
Six months pass:
Weight 200 lbs. My average speed for an hour is up from a jumpy 3.0 mph to a more stable 3.8 mph. Form still feels a bit random. Went to first demo day at Deep Cove in Vancouver. The new V8 is no different for me than the old. Speed about 1.0 mph faster than the inflatable. The Big Ease is a little faster than the V8 with the same stability, but a tight fit in the hips. The new V10S is stable at rest, but I’m into the secondary stability every third stroke. I can feel that the speed wall is further out than for the Big Ease. Fit is fine (36” waist).
Back home I did stability training with those big balls, 3 times a week, 10 minutes at a time, feet eventually on a chair level with the ball. A month later at the next demo day I’m never into the secondary stability in the new V10S . It worked for me. Form still feels a bit random though.
I went to a two day forward stroke clinic. I do not look like Zsolt; ego crushed. Catch, leg drive, and arms all changed. It took three months to put all the pieces of my stroke back together again.
One year from start:
The locals don’t even notice me stalking them anymore. Training is now three times a week. My hour speed is at 4.3 mph in the inflatable. Form feels stable. I can now LOAD my strokes. My V10S Ultra should show up in a week or two. My Goal for the next 6 months in the V10S is an hour average speed of 6.0 mph and a solid remount.
After that: waves and a bit of racing
A big thanks to all the beginners on this site who talked about their experiences/questions and everyone who commented and included their weight and background.

Assistance with paddle selection - by: Hacker Mike

Greatings from a new member.

I would appreciate some assistance on selecting a paddle. My "storey" is as follows:

I paddled surf ski's and K1's many yrs ago (from around 1980 to 1995), but for various reasons (including health issues) I stopped paddling completely. About 5 weeks ago (at age 52 and after not paddling for 20 odd yrs), I decided to give paddling another go. My objective is to be able to do the odd Dice and get fit enough to enjoy the Millers (and other) down wind runs. I tried to resurrect my old Life Saving surf ski, but that was definately not sea worthy, so ended up in investing in a Fenn Swordfish. My old paddles (219cm Braca 1's) are still in good condition and I have been using those for the last few weeks. My cadence is pretty slow and I am only managing to get the ave boat speed to about 10km/h. I am sure that this is largely due to my lack of fitness, which should (hopefully) improve with time. That said, I have been doing a bit of reading, which suggests that the 219 is way to long for Surfski and hence am looking to get a split paddle. The question now is which?

I have tried the Orka Inner which I found quite "loose" (for lack of a better term) in the water when compared to my existing paddle (which is rock solid from the biggining of the stroke). I haven't been able to try any other paddles.

Any suggestions on what I should look at?

I am based in Cape Town.

Knock-off paddles - by: Uncle Frosty

Just wondering how people feel about buying Chinese knock-off paddles. There is a company I have recently become aware of, RPC3.com, that is selling a 100% carbon wing paddles for $240 USD. Makes you wonder about the price of name brand paddles. At the same time, one does not want to support theft of intellectual property.

I hate Walmart for what they do to their employees and suppliers, but it is difficult not to buy groceries there because they are sometimes half the cost of other stores. Seems like this is a similar situation, with arguments on both sides.

G' Day,
When we water down the sport it will no longer be a sport, You can buy a 45lb Tupper Tub for 1/2 the price and at least it is not called a Surf Ski. were may I ask is the sport we loved going on main land U.S. and other places in the world were people think they want to paddle Surf Ski? the sport and the learning curve is to long for most today so they buy a. losing the word very Loose Surf Ski for swamp and pond paddling Why? The Surf Ski only comes into its own on Open Water, there are many nicer Faster Paddle and sailing toys sold the do and go faster than a ski on any flat thing.
So Sad to see a sport going to hell other than Oz Land and S. Africa, wheeneeeeeee ! world is becoming sister world and I am speaking about Men? and Not Downing you Lady's, I Love you all and you should be wearing the pants and taking over Men's world because few are around any longer how san we be.

Kayak ergometer - by: alexhunter72

Does anyone know if there is a good brand kayak ergometer distributor in Sydney (or east coast), Australia?

Last time I looked into it the only way you could get hold of a decent one here was to import from the US.

Are there any opinions regarding the off-water training benefits of kayak ergometer versus rowing ergometer for surfski cross training?
