Boat Help - by: bukeit

Hi Everyone,

I used to do flat water sprint kayaking a decade ago, I used to paddle the equivalent to Nelo's Cinco. I know that its like riding a bike, but it has been a decade since I have paddled more than a couple of miles a year.

I just moved to the gulf coast, and will be living with access to the ocean. I feel like this is a perfect opportunity for me to pick up kayaking again. :) The only shame is that I cannot find any clubs close to town... SUP seems to be the go to sport.

What boat should I be looking at? I competed internationally in flat water sprint racing, and my technique isn't too bad. :) I presume my balance is still good, but I do not want to be falling out all the time!

Any advice you can give would be appreciated. I can't find any local clubs that sell surf skis for me to try.

Thank you!

Are there any surfskis not being made that we need - by: rhainan

It seems like we are living in the best of times, surf ski wise. From pre preg to rotomolded, beginner to expert, Epic, Stellar Fenn and Think seem to have almost all areas covered. Is there anything missing?

Do any of you folks see a general need for any type or style of ski that is not currently made?

Per our discussion on doubles, I see a need for more stable double surf ski along the lines of the prototype V8 double that has been seen by a few paddlers (paddled by bigfoot and the Yeti no less).

I also can see rotomolded boats jumping up in performance. Perhaps a 20' roto ski would be far too heavy, but a slimmer, high performance V7 would find a home with many of us, I'm sure. Could the rumored V9 be a reality?

Finally, those of you that spend a lot of time downwind seem to be hinting that shorter is the way of the future. Do we need a high performance 18 foot/5.5m meter surf ski?

What else is or should be coming to a beach near you?

New drysuit water-soak? - by: SurfskiEstonia

Hi, guys!

Tried the new drysuit today on a 3-hour paddle in a sea kayak, where I tried to do my best in leg drive and torso rotation - so a lot of friction in the seat. There was some water in the cockpit and the seat was more or less under water. As the water here is about 1*C, I felt quite cold at times and after arrival inspected the drysuit and saw that the material covering the paddlers behind was visibly wet compared to everything else (one the photo you can see the wet spots on the right and the larger area in the middle). The baselayer pants I was wearing were completely wet. I am 90% confident that it was not simply from sweating.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Thanks :)

One man's trash - another's treasure! - by: Simon Haywood

Hi all,

I started paddling late 2011 - after I bought my first ski, I researched this paddling game and in particular downwind paddling. I decided that a Huki S1-R might be a perfect ski for me...I'm 6'2", over 115kg and not particularly fit with no technique or balance...an average 'C' grade paddler with no intention of moving from there.
The West Coast of Australia is along way from California...So getting a Huki was always going to be difficult.
I like to buy & sell and I've owned lots of skis in that time (in excess of 20!). Always looking for a ski that might make up for some of my deficiencies.
In our local trading publication I found an advert for this Huki S1-R, it was built for the guy selling it - with a wider bucket, vacuum glass/carbon cockpit...an almost perfect fit for me. This ski was well used and not particularily well looked after...And the price asked & paid was reflective of that (not much!)...Both parties were happy with the deal.
The ski leaked...Damaged venturi drain, damage to the nose & tail, rudder(damaged) had been pushed through the bottom of the ski (repaired (cosmetically) - not very well structually), footboard/rails, pedals, cable were damaged and corroded and leg length was too short for me. There were 120 dents, dings & gouges in the hull & deck.
My offsider at work was once a boat builder (since retired) and I've messed around with boats all my life...so part therapy, part something to do after work over a beer we decided to refresh & remodel this Huki.
We made a composite footboard from some Stellar & Fenn parts, lifted and re-engineered the side and centre rail, re-worked a 9" Stellar rudder and fitted it with a Huki shaft, new inspection port (just for cosmetic reasons). we added carbon (centre) hand grips (the block of wood was the template/mould), re-did the steering using dyneema line, made and fitted new scuppers for the venturis, ground out the repairs and re-did them, filled and faired the ski and repainted the ski using 2 pack polyurethane paint - Stellar's Zinc Yellow to match some of my other skis.
About 15 hours work spread over 6 weeks and about a carton and half of beer!

I'm posting this for a friend who's selling her surf ski, a rare (in the States) South African Green 7. Here's the info: Green 7, cork with fiberglass overlay. Around 28 Ibs. 21 feet 6 inches. The previous owner barely paddled it and my friend has only had it out 3 times. Beautiful boat! $1800.00 The boat is currently located in NJ, but can be shipped in the States.

For a review of the Green 7 see: www.surfski.info/reviews/story/298/surfs...o-review-green7.html

Fenn Swordfish for 55kg paddler - by: andis

What do you think? Will she be too buoyant?
She loves her v10l but needs a second boat in a different location. She can handle small to moderate conditions in the v10l.
Hates my v10s, can't control the motion and is unstable in the chop.

Alternatively new Nelo 520 (where is the rocker?) or fenn spark (maybe not quite ready for it).

Not really looking towards other brands due to limited availability here (stellar/knysna/carbonology) or economics (think).

Any views?

fitting a cadence sensor to a paddle - by: kevin brunette

Does anyone have experience of fitting a cadence sensor on a paddle? I have a GARMIN FR910XT that can receive cadence input, but this seems to be limited to placing the transmitter on the crank on a bike. Would an accelerometer provide the necessary signal if placed on the base of a blade? Does it need to be a GARMIN product?
Another method to measure cadence could be to link the device with a foot pod placed under a footpad. Has anyone considered this?

Well done Brett. Marathon gold doesn't come without huge effort and extent of that recognised in Masters Male Paddler of Year Australia!

Nickname change coming up? Marathon_Gold_Macdonald has a ring to it.

Top effort.

Seat design ergonomics - by: Steve Hansen

In my limited experience I have never seen a surfski with a perfectly flat section in the bucket from side to side. I realize it would have to be rather small. It seems most seat shapes mirror the shape of the hull for obvious reasons. I'm just wondering if it makes any difference to the sit bones whether they are sitting on a perfectly flat area or slightly concave?

Another question concerning seat design: How important is it for the deepest part of the seat to be in the back of the bucket where it keeps you from sliding forward? It seems like this is ignored in some designs.

I know everyone's rear end is different butt what makes a comfortable seat area and who is doing the best job with it?

Fenn XT for sale - by: jj1945

Sad sale due to upgrade. Fenn XT, great condition. Fibreglass so entry level, but one of the most stable and easy to paddle skis out there.

Suit beginner or someone looking to upgrade from plastic. Only reason for sale is due to an upgrade after paddling for two years in this ski and loving it!

Have done Short course Augusta race in the ski and it has mainly been paddled in the ocean.

Kept undercover and washed down after every use.

Looking at an OC1 - by: kwolfe

So I know its not a surfski, however I know that a number of folks on this forum probably cross over and I could use some help quick. I SUP as well as surfski and love both. Therefore I would really like to round out the trifecta by getting an OC1 to complete my obsession :)

I have been looking at new boats and around me I can get a Hurricane for about $3700 and Antares for about $4400. The Antares is definitely out of my price range. I forgot to mention that I live in central PA, so 95% of the time, I'll be paddling lakes and rivers. On a good windy day, I might see 2-3 ft rolling swells, but most of the time its FLAT.

That being said, I came across a fella near me that has a used Kai Wa'a Scorpius for sale. Not sure of year, but it looks to be in great shape minus one repair that was done under the seat. He's asking $2400 for the boat with the covers. I would you folks mind lending me your advice? I attached a few pics so you can see for yourself.

seat rubbing on lower back - by: topswimmer

Just looking for any tips/advice.
When paddling my NK squall on flat water for long periods i often find i have rubbed the skin of the base of my back in two spots, just small patches about 1" diameter.
Do i need to raise my sitting position or lengthen my footboard position?
I have a slight bend in my legs & have reasonable leg drive. If i lengthen my footboard position will i have nothing to press against or should i always have a gap between the back of the seatwell?
Any comments most welcome

Tracking for safety - by: Mako

I've been using a free phone tracker for some time and think and it may be useful for racing and training safety in the absence of event / private tracking. I'm on 24/7. Any IOS / Android GPS enabled smartphone works.

The app is Traccar Client. Download to your phone and it gives the phone a unique ID. Then go to the website and add your ID to the Devices tab using any name you choose then fill in the identifier (ID shown on your phone when the app is opened. It's as easy as that.

To try it out you can go to www.demo.traccar.org and login using This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and password surfskisafety or you can open your own account.
You can decide if you want to be tracked and turn the app on and off in a second. You can set time period interval for position upload from every second to a few minutes. I've not found any significant data penalty. There's a Traccar Manager app for logging in on a smartphone / tablet.

Look carefully and you can play back anyone's track that is registered. You can remove yourself from the page as you can anyone else so please play nice if you decide to use or try it out on the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. LOGIN. You can also check the battery condition of the phone you are tracking which is a big plus in working out if the phone is going to drop off.
The App is a free / donate site and is still being developed by Anton Tananaev. I'm on 24/7 for the moment. You can only use your identifier on one LOGIN page. If you want to migrate to another Login you need to uninstall the app and download it again which only takes a minute and gives you a new device identifier (ID number). Feel free to login using the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. account. It takes a while before you show up on the page.

fenn cockpits - by: Boof Head

Hi All,
I've been paddling my Stellar SE for 6 years now.
I'm thinking about buying another ski (used) and haven't had a Fenn yet. Having a read up on the latest Fenns, the Glide seems to fit the bill for the paddling I do.
I can access an older fenn elite to test paddle.
QUESTION: is the cockpit of the Glide similar to or the same as the older Elite?

Cheers

GoPro Hero4 Silver vs Garmin Virb - by: SurfskiEstonia

Hi, guys!

Which one would You buy from these two?

The aim is to film myself in a slalom kayak in the surf and also film my surf ski paddling technique on the flats.

The picture quality is better on the gopro, but the virb has an inbuilt speed indication, which is kinda neat :)

Any input appreciated :)

Hi
I am going to Crescent Head all next week. Has anyone done much surfski up there? I am intermediate level. Also is it all ocean paddling or are there any worthwhile lakes, or rivers close by.

Thanks
