Chalupsky´s paddling technique - by: malvina

Hello,

I recently watched on youtube Oscar´s surfski clinic in Mauritius (link below). In it, he strongly suggest a couple of changes to what I understand is the current technique being used as standard by most paddlers today. Specifically:

1- He advocates for 0 feathering of the paddle (as opposed to the 50 to 60 feather recommended by other experts and pros).
2- He recommends keeping elbows very low throughout the stroke (as apposed to the "chicken wing" or "ball under the armpit" approaches).

He provides very convincing arguments and I have started to gradually incorporate these changes into my stroke. They both feel quite weird at the beginning, thought I am sure with time they will become natural.

Anyway, his approach seem so different to other experts´recommendations and to what many paddlers have been doing for decades that I wanted to see if anybody has any comments on the benefits (or demerits) of these changes or any advice on transitioning to them.

Hello,
I want to change from an intermediate surfski to an advanced surfski. I measure 1.72 and weigh between 67 and 70 kilograms, I have a narrow waist too. I want a surfski that has a good level in all weather conditions and had the doubt of an Elite S Carbon or an ELITE Spark Carbon. Could you help me?

Thank you so much

Paddle grabbing enough? - by: firtree

I am a pretty new paddler with an S18S and an Epic Small Mid wing paddle. I keep reading about feeling like your paddle is in cement or rock-solid, but I just don't get that feeling and wonder if I am doing something wrong. If I am pushing hard to get up to speed I quickly overpower the paddle and cavitate, but even when I am just cruising along, I don't feel a lot of pressure on the paddle. The paddle just feels like it is pulling nice and smooth through the water. To be clear, I am not unhappy with my speed over water (I am doing an unimpressive 5mph average over an hour), but something seems off. If it matters, I am 6' 220lbs and reasonably strong, though without the best endurance. I am working on getting and keeping my stroke rate up higher to keep me moving along at speed.

Thanks!

Hi I am currently paddling a Carbonology Vault 1st gen(Australian), The paddling i'm doing and i'm still learning, I find the Vault a bit unstable in messed up water,Like boat wake, Or tide chop or swell coming from angles. I was looking to get out of the ski, And i was looking at the Think Evo Gen 2 (2016), Just wondering if i would be wasting my time to change.
I'm paddling twice a week in enclosed waters only
Any feed back would be appreciated
Thanks

Why NOT a waist leash? - by: sski

Still pretty new but have read some threads and tried out several combos.
What are disadvantages of waist leash? I love it.
Most seem to use leg leashes.
With waist leash, you can always attach a rear anchor point with marine cement if there is not a good factory site (chief negative i've heard). No/less entanglement, easy to get to rudder or around boat if needed, no mess down in footwell, no knee ligament/tendon injuries, you have extra bungee cord if needed (slightly facetious).

Some time ago, I added the ability for forum members to send each other private messages...

Then I forgot about it.

Today, for the first time, I noticed, when I looked at my profile, that I had private messages in my inbox... :-)

I apologise to those who sent me unanswered PMs!

I've now configured it so that the recipient of a private message is automatically sent an email notification when a PM has been received. Hopefully this will make the whole PM vibe a lot more useful. (You can go into your profile and switch this off if you want.)

Cracked Paddle - by: Nordy

Can you crack a paddle paddling??

I got back from a paddle today, and noticed a crack running half way across the blade, about 8 cm from the neck, not the toe of the paddle.

I definitely didn’t bang it on anything. Don’t usually bang it against the cut outs when paddling either. Pretty sure it wasn’t cracked on Tuesday when I went out last.
So did it crack paddling today? I’ve had it about 4 years.

Second question, can I continue using it? Or is there a chance of the blade completely snapping off during a paddle?

Thanks guys. Pretty bummed about it.

Gen 1 Think Evo - by: SpaceSputnik

Hi All

A quick question. Is Gen 1 Evo significantly different (worse) than the gens 2 and 3?
I am trying to determine if it's worth the trouble shipping a used one from across the country (seems doable but not sure if it's worth the hassle...probably not).

I am 5'6" 160 lb (ish) trying to get out of a V7 for the next season.

Thanks a bunch.

Fenn elite S new seat vs old - by: Marcabee

Hi. Wondering if anyone has feedback on the new Elite S seat vs old seat. They’re both available on new build and I believe that is the only difference? I’m doing to purchase and I know demo is the way but it’s also good to get some feedback. 32” waste and Spark just that little too tight. I’d prefer rotation rather the locked in bum.
Thanks all

Sorry about the category announcements , it did not give me the drop down option for anything else.

Paddle length? - by: GrumpySmurf

Hi, I'm new here and is a beginner. My only kayak experiences were with wide fishing and recreational ones. I do SUP regularly.

Yesterday, I bought a used Spirit PRS 570, which came with a 210cm fiberglass & plastic Spirit paddle. As I'm only 163cm tall (5'4"), the paddle is thought to be too long for me. If I put the paddle next to me, my finger tips won't even touch the top.

I was advised that I should be able to curl my fingers over the top blade?

But looking around online, it looks like a 210cm paddle is usually considered short and is recommended?

So, what is it? should I stick with the 210cm or do I need a 194cm paddle?

Also, could I remove the blade on this paddle and shorten the shaft and the re-glue the blades back?

oval vs round paddle shaft? - by: sski

I think I will upgrade and get a nice paddle, thinking Epic. But in general, what are the pros and cons of oval vs round shafts?
And now I see the top end ?pro grip? series has thinner round, normal thickness round and ovalized (25.5 mm, 28.5mm and 28.2x 31.7mm).
Pros and cons?
thanks

foot strap purpose - by: mickeyA

What exactly is the foot strap used for? Do you actually pull one foot back against strap while driving the other foot and leg forward? In rough beach surf (spec ski), I take my straps off because 1) when I first jump on ski and wave is coming at me fast, I need to paddle asap, not worry about getting my foot under the straps, and 2) sometimes I throw my foot or leg off to the side for balance in irregular surf, and 3) if I wipe out in surf, I hate getting stuck in the straps. BUT, on flat water or downwind (ocean ski), none of those concerns are valid. Should I start tightening my straps all the way to where I always feel the straps solidly on the tops of my feet so I can pull with one foot while pushing on the other? If not, what are the straps for? I can maybe see using them as a last resort to stay in the boat, but I think the aforementioned negatives outweigh that. thanks.

of fragile surfskis and good dealers - by: TomVW

Since a few months, water kept coming out of the purging hole of my Nelo550 whenever I would turn it upside down.
At first, I thought it was the result of a few capsizes and remounts during an open water outing where I misjudged my stability in short, steep, wind chop.
In the following weeks, I practiced remounts extensively during my flat water outings, and water kept coming out whenever I upturned the boat.

The last few weeks, however, about a glass of water came out after every outing on flat water without any capsize of waves over the bow. Since the hull was, as far as a good see, undamaged, I started to suspect a leaking rudder of bailer.

Unable to find the leak myself, I took the boat to the dealer (Arjan Bloem in the Netherlands) for inspection: he found that what I had mistaken for a flaw in the gelcoat near the nose, under the waterline, was actually a soft spot leaking water into the hull. Since it was a production issue and the boat was only 6 months old, it was covered by the warranty.

Now, they could have kept the boat for repairs and have me pick it up a few weeks later. Instead, they offered me another 550 from their stock, which I could take home there-and-then. That saved me the hassle of driving back-and-forth another time (about 6 hours) and put me in a new boat instead of a repaired one.

In this age of Amazon online shopping and cheep knock-off products with no service or support, I would like to publicly thank Arjan Bloem for standing behind their products and providing a great service overall.

What about your dealer? Any other good stories to share?

Tom

V10 vs. V10L for 170 lb. Paddler - by: TheJRM

Long story short: I have spent the past 2 and a half months training in a V10 Gen 2 (closing in on 60 hours of bucket time). This is my first true season of paddling & racing. I weigh 170 lbs and stand just shy of 5'11" with an inseam of approximately 32". Long time endurance athlete, but new to surfski. Current boat (owned): Epic V7.

After training and racing in the V7 since this past May, I have barely touched that boat since mid August when I started paddling a borrowed V10 and V10S (both ultras). I spent quite a bit of time in a V10 Sport, raced it successfully and found it to be that sweet spot of super stable on the flat and stable, yet still challenging enough, in ocean conditions. Speed improvements in both the V10S and V10 were huge: .5 - .7 mph increase in speed over the V7. I'm very comfortable in the V10S and am buying a lightly used model this weekend along with a Big Boy rack and Epic full carbon paddle. I plan on using the V10 Sport for ocean training and racing next season.

As happy as I am with the V10 Sport, all of the time that I have spent in the V10 has most certainly helped me to progress as a paddler. Based on numerous 1 hour tempo sessions, I found the V10 to to be .1 - .2 mph faster than the V10 Sport... in flat water (my best 1 hour tempo session to date was 7.3+ mph in the V10 vs 7.2 mph in the V10S during an 8.2 mile flat water race). I have also found that training in the V10 makes the V10S feel much, much more stable by comparison, which goes a long way in regards to stability development. I see the V10 as a training tool that is helping me to progress, but am in no way operating under the assumption that I am ready to start racing it... yet.

My biggest issue with the V10: I feel like a cork in this boat. The wind pushes me around like crazy, I feel like the boat sits way up on top of the water instead of in it, and as soon as the wind or side chop picks up, my stroke becomes tentative and I struggle to produce power thanks to the fact that I'm putting all of my energy into staying upright. The V10S, on the other hand, allows me to power through and focus primarily upon my stroke.

As a lean, small - middle weight athlete, I'd have to think that the volume of the V10 is working against me. Seems like the bigger guys (200+ lbs.) have a much easier time than I do in this boat.

My question, for those of you with experience with the latest generation of the V10L is this: Does the lower volume help on the stability front for people weighing in the 165 - 170 lb. range? I plan on investing in a second boat this coming spring that I will use for flat water training and racing only (at least for 2019). I was hoping that I might find the V10L to be a little more stable in strong cross winds and chop given the lower volume, but I've never paddled one and am not sure when I'll have the chance to do so.

Thanks in advance for any feedback people can progress.

compare/contrast beginner surf skis - by: sski

I caught the bug 15 mos ago- a buddy visited and paddled on lakes w/ me for a few days. He was in a V10S of mine but fell ?every 15 min or so on a quiet lake.
He is pulling the trigger and buying a boat.
I tried some online research on beginner boats- V8, Nelo 520 xl?, Think Ace? Not sure Stellar-S18S?
Comments or suggestions?
He will be mostly on lakes (lives inland Midwest) with some higher wind/waves if he really seeks them out, which i believe he will want to do eventually-plenty of those like Superior!
thanks in advance

Paddling at night - what lights to use? - by: MCImes

$

Well, for those of us in the Northern hemisphere the daylight saving time change happened last weekend which means its dark before 5:00 until March. My paddling will not be deterred though - I have paddled in the dark for years and love it, but typically on quiet and small bodies of water where a kayak fisherman was the only obstacle around.
Now, living on a small harbor, there is occasional small boat traffic and I should probably make myself easily visible as to not be run over.

Has anyone on here found reliable waterproof lights? Im really looking for 2 types:
1- A white light that is on at all times. This could be like a pencil flare type that mounts to the deck, or a button type that clips to your PFD. (I can epoxy a mounting bracket to the deck if needed). Ease of use (clip or easy mount) and battery life being most valuable

2- a 'SOS' flashing light that is only used in emergencies. Brightness, reliability, and battery life would be the valuable features here.

I've tried a few different 'waterproof lights' in the past, but few have survived very long. Just wondering if anyone here has had good success with marine lights.

Thanks!
